Week before last, Danny's preschool class took a field trip to the zoo. My good friend watched Holland (and braved the crying) so I could go and spend the morning with his class. What a day!
First, let me say that when we left in the morning, the skies were clear. By the time I dropped off the baby and drove to the zoo, it had started to POUR. The only rain gear I could scrounge up in the van was a child's tiny umbrella and Danny's jacket, which had a hood. Just walking from the van to the entrance, we were drenched!
I made a quick stop at the gift shop and bought two thin ponchos and a flimsy zebra print umbrella for $20 (highway robbery!). We made our way to the first event on our agenda - an indoor animal encounter. Wouldn't you know it? By the time we left, the skies were clear again. Not a drop of rain. I was a little irritated that I'd spent $20 on rain gear, but then a more optimistic friend suggested I think of it as having paid $20 to guarantee a rain-free morning. So we'll go with that perspective!
At the animal encounter, the kids learned about birds, mammals, and reptiles and got to pet one of each - a ring necked pigeon, some kind of lizard, and a tiny hedgehog. The hedgehog was really a hit. His name was Kenya.

All told, we had a fun little morning with the Frogs and Butterfly classes. I'm so glad I could go spend that time with Danny, and grateful to my friend for helping with Holland. A good time was had by all.
